- W2017296114 abstract "There is evidence that, in the rabbit, activation of synapses in the anterior hypothalamic/preoptic area by exogenously applied or endogenously released noradrenaline, leads to a rise in body temperature. In the genesis of fever by bacterial endotoxin. it is thought that a prostaglandin is released in the anterior hypothalamic/preoptic area. It has been suggested that activation of temperature raising pathways by this substance is mediated through a noradrenergic mechanism in this brain region. To test these concepts either proslaglandin E1 (75 ng) or noradrenaline (2 or 8 fig) was microinjected bilaterally into the anterior hypothalamic/preoptic area of conscious, restrained rabbits in a thermoneutral environment. Injections of prostaglandin E1 caused fever accompanied by vasoconstriction in the ears and a reduced frequency of respiration. Injections of noradrenaline at the same tissue sites had no important influence on thermoregulation. Intraventricular injections of 75 or 150 μg noradrenaline caused fever. The observation that microinjections of noradrenaline did not cause fever fails to support the concept that release of the catecholamine as a neurotransmitter in the anterior hypothalamic/preoptic area serves to mediate a normal or pathological increase in body temperature." @default.
