- W2017299503 abstract "Despite reports of volumetric differences between bipolar and normal control groups, few studies compare bipolar disorder with schizophrenia, a disorder in which structural brain abnormalities have been well established. Here we present MRI findings on age and gender matched bipolar, schizophrenic, and normal control groups (n = 10, 20, and 29, respectively) to provide initial information on volumetric measures that may distinguish these two disorders. After T1-weighted MRI scans were acquired with a Signa 5X System and gray/white segmented, Brodmann analysis of gray and white matter volume (GMV, WMV) was conducted on the ventral and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, cingulate gyrus, and lateral/medial portions of the temporal lobe. Frontal, temporal and cingulate areas were separately assessed with repeated-measures ANOVA using hemisphere, region, Brodmann area, and GMV/WMV as within-subject factors, and diagnostic group as the between-subject factor. There were no coherent frontal lobe findings. Significant interactions were obtained for the temporal lobe (Group X Hemisphere X Region: medial/lateral X GMV/WMV X Brodmann area) and cingulate gyrus (Group X GMV/WMV X Brodmann area). Post-hoc tests indicated greater GMV and less WMV in right medial temporal areas in bipolar as compared with schizophrenic and normal subjects and greater WMV in both patient groups in right lateral temporal areas. Bilateral cingulate GMV reductions in bipolar patients and WMV reductions in schizophrenic patients were also found. These preliminary findings suggest that regional gray ande white matter differences may distinguish bipolar disorder from schizophrenia." @default.
