- W2017308090 abstract "Pressure–volume–temperature (PVT) simulation of individual petroleum inclusions that are trapped in source rocks, migration pathways, and reservoirs, is, when combined with standard inclusion analytical techniques, a useful tool for the quantitative estimation of paleopressures, paleotemperatures and changes in petroleum compositions over time. This study presents the results from the application of these techniques to determine the evolution of the petroleum trapped through time as maturation and migration progress within the Greater Alwyn—South Brent petroleum system of the northern North Sea. The results for the Brent reservoir from the six study fields indicate that the petroleum inclusions recorded a wide range of compositions during the filling history of the reservoir. The methane concentrations and gas/oil ratios of included petroleum are lower than those presently within the reservoir. The fluid inclusion data suggest that changes in petroleum compositions through time can be interpreted in terms of gradual mixing of earlier reservoired oil with later migrated, more mature and gas-rich fluids. Fields nearest the kitchen area appear to have been more severely affected by the emplacement of increasingly mature petroleum. Phase separation during vertical migration may also occur, but is thought to be a volumetrically minor process. The estimated paleopressures mostly correspond to the current pressure regime, which is slightly higher than hydrostatic and lower than lithostatic. Combining fluid inclusion results with thermal–burial models suggests that petroleum migration began at approximately 55–64 Ma in the area. This study provides quantitative limits on and confirms the value of fluid inclusion technology in such applications as evaluating oil compositions, migration timing, trap-fill history, paleopressures, and in constraining the outputs of basin modeling." @default.
