- W2017366120 abstract "Abstract Recent technical history in networking is reminiscent of events in other areas of computing: there have been dramatic advances in the basic technology used in systems, and cycles of development and enhancement followed by re-design. Local networks can be seen as a re-design of packet-switching technology to make it faster, cheaper, and more generally useful. However, there is reason to believe that two major failings of packet networks, higher level protocols and host interfaces, are once again being neglected, this time in the context of local networks. In most network projects, the communications subnetworks have been designed first. They have been designed by professionals, otherwise known as “ network people .” Higher level network functions have usually been designed later and by committee. The committee is also usually made up of “ network people .”.It has usually taken several years after networks have first been installed for them to achieve some widespread use among a real users' community as opposed to some experimental use by the “ network people .” Some of the major costs and one of the major reasons for delayed acceptance in networks has been the delay in design and implementation of higher level protocols and functions. In particular, it has not been easy to connect host computers to networks. If the points above are accepted as historical reality (certainly some are debatable), then there are a few important conclusions: 1. 1. Networks have been designed backwards . The inside-out approach, starting from the lowest level functions and working toward the user, has not worked well. 2. 2. Higher level protocols have not been successful yet. There are very few host level protocols in existence; each took several years to design and install on a significant number of computers. 3. 3. Network vendors have not offered cheap, simple network interfaces which permit general-purpose communications. Users express the desire to “ just plug right in ” to networks. In response to this pressure, many network vendors have introduced ad hoc host connections which make the network a transparent substitute for existing links (e.g., DMEP in Telenet, or the MCCU in AUTODIN II. These are undesirable expedients since they do not offer the host the full inter-process communication capability of the network. What is needed is the concept of a network operating system among all of the devices, providing for distributed data processing and distributed data bases. In order to facilitate this kind of system, the designers of local networks need to focus their attention on the network control programs which reside in the hosts and terminals. The new generation of highly intelligent terminals must be designed and built to be network-oriented. I would suggest that much of the work going on today in local network technology is misdirected . People should consider shifting their attention from the local network itself to the higher level protocols in order to make the use of the network practical and cost-effective for a new generation of computing equipment." @default.
