- W2017408743 abstract "Monthly incubations of cobra adrenal tissue have been performed using [4-14C]-progesterone as substrate. The ability of the adrenal tissue to synthesize corticosteroids and androgens when taken to indicate the secretory activity of the gland correlates well with the seasonal cycle in histology previously reported. The corticosterone production is high in spring after arousal from hibernation and during the mating period in April, lower during the summer, and recovers slowly during the winter from the lowest levels observed during the autumn. The weight of the inguinal fat-bodies might suggest that high corticosterone production in the spring is associated with energy demand, and that lowered corticosterone production allows the animal to store food reserves in the form of fat. Androgen secretion by the adrenal does not show any seasonal effect and is low throughout the year. The adrenal seems therefore to contribute minimally to the androgen pool of the animal." @default.
