We summarise recently developed theory of the current-voltage output which identifies loss factors in a readily calculable way. We have produced stable CdSe films which show an overall conversion efficiency of sunlight of over 3% and have the highest fill factors reported for such films. The production method is particularly simple and low cost, and lends itself to scaling up for large area application, to offer solar electricity of promising economic output. Measurement by electron and X-ray methods reveal the effects of annealing on film grain size and surface composition. Performance figures should continue to rise as the film quality is improved." @default.
