- W2017440096 abstract "An introductory study of the dynamics of the shear layer separating from the front edge of two-dimensional, surface-mounted, square-section blocks is reported. Measurements of mean velocity and turbulence intensity within the shear layer are presented, for a range of boundary-layer thickness to block-height ratios (δ/H); they demonstrate directly the effect of increasing the upstream boundary-layer thickness on the shear layer's growth and spatial position. The original purpose of the investigation was to determine whether such flows contain strong periodicity and, accordingly, measurements of velocity probability-density distributions, auto-correlations and spectra are presented. Similar measurements behind three-dimensional bodies of various aspect ratios mounted in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer are reported. The results demonstrate that unless the body is relatively tall compared to its other dimensions, any periodicity, if it exists at all, is weak and is therefore unlikely to affect the validity of attempting to calculate such flows using steady-flow equations." @default.
