- W2017478134 abstract "The jellyfish Stomolopus meleagris L. Agassiz is a strong horizontal swimmer. The course of this jellyfish is characterized by little pitch or yaw, and roll is counter-clockwise at a constant rate. This steady course suggests that these jellyfish compensate for local turbulence. Within local populations, jellyfish usually (13 out of 15 cases) swam in roughly the same direction, i.e. their orientation was non-random (Raleigh test, P<0.02). Overall swimming direction of local jellyfish populations was significantly correlated with the direction of the wind and surface waves (circular-circular correlation, √nr=2.04, P<0.025) but was not significantly correlated with either the sun's bearing or local current direction. Free-swimming jellyfish whose paths were deflected by turbulence (natural or man-made) rapidly re-orientated either to their initial orientation, or at 180° to the initial orientation. The data suggest that S. meleagris actively orientates swimming relative to directional cues in the water column." @default.
