The mechanisms responsible for this coarsening have been extensively studied in recent years. None of the models distinguish the effects of Ostwald ripening from those caused by directional coalescence. In this paper, both mechanisms are considered to contribute to the rafting process in separate ways, and a phenomenological description of the thickening behavior of {gamma}{prime} precipitates during rafting is formulated to explain experimental data reported in the literature.
