- W2017508443 abstract "Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the fetus contains a remarkably high concentration of protein; in some species (e.g. pig and sheep) it approaches 1 g/100 ml early in gestation. Adult CSF is characterized by a very low protein concentration (e.g. 25 mg/100 ml) and proteins in blood are largely excluded from the brain and CSF by mechanisms collectively known as the blood-brain and blood-CSF barriers. These barrier mechanisms have previously been considered to be immature in the fetus; evidence relating to barrier immaturity is briefly reviewed and recent data are presented which suggest that the brain and CSF are already specialized and perhaps even separate compartments within the internal environment of the early fetus. The proteins in CSF appear to originate from the plasma by transcellular transfer across the fetal choroid plexus. Several of the proteins (e.g. α-fetoprotein, albumin and fetuin) are found ‘within’ developing neurons in the fetal brain. It is suggested that studies of the internal environment of the fetal brain may yield important clues about some features of brain development." @default.
