- W2017536698 abstract "Total and unesterified cholesterol in cerebrospinal fluids of hydrocephalus, with and without ventriculoatrial shunt, were determined and compared with those of control. The control group, consisted of patients with various types of brain damage but with no known neurovisceral lipidosis, yields values of 0.15 mg% for unesterified cholesterol and 0.43 mg% for total cholesterol concentrations. Hydrocephalus without shunt shows increases in both unesterified and total cholesterol contents, being 0.42 and 0.92 mg% respectively. Hydrocephalus with shunt displays further increases, being 0.85 mg% for unesterified cholesterol and 1.56 mg% for total cholesterol. Of the total cholesterol increases, the unesterified form accounts for a greater proportion than its esters; i.e. the unesterified cholesterol arises from 35% of the total cholesterol for control to 44% and 55% for hydrocephalus without and with shunt respectively. Possible causes for the cholesterol elevation in post shunt hydrocephalus have also been discussed." @default.
