- W2017589843 abstract "To determine current attitudes and use of progesterone to prevent preterm birth (PTB) among board certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialists in the United States. In February and March of 2005, 1230 questionnaires were mailed to all board certified SMFM members (with a second mailing to non-responders). Descriptive statistics and χ2 was used for analysis. The response rate was 47% (572/1230). Of these, 54% (307/572) were in academic centers and 99% were currently in clinical practice. Among responders, 67% (384/572) used progesterone and 33% (188) did not. Use of progesterone was not influenced by age, gender and number of years in practice. The highest use of progesterone was in the southeast (79%) and the lowest in the northwest (46%) regions of the US. The majority of users (86%) preferred weekly IM administration, and the most frequent indication was SPTB <34 weeks (41%). Among users, 38.5% recommended progesterone for indications other than prior SPTB. Users and nonusers differed on a number of concerns regarding progesterone (Table). Most board certified MFM specialists in the US are currently using progesterone, but notably, many are using it for indications other than prior preterm birth. Nonusers are significantly more concerned about the efficacy and safety of progesterone and the adequacy of current data.Tabled 1Comparison of concerns regarding use of progesterone amnong users versus nonusersUsers concerned n=384Non-Users concerned n=188P valueSafety39.7%56.1%<0.001Efficacy65.5%86.4%<0.001Need for more data78.0%97.2%<0.001Long-term fetal effects62.8%76.6%0.001No FDA approval43.1%60.8%<0.001Liability36.4%54.4%<0.001Availability76.5%80.8%0.159 Open table in a new tab" @default.
