- W2017599606 abstract "All baboon DNA contains multiple copies of baboon endogenous virus genes (BaEV) and DNA from phylogenetically related primates that diverged 30–50 million years ago has also been reported to contain BaEV related sequences. In this study, we examined the arrangement of BaEV related genes in DNA of four species of baboons (Papio) and primates from several genera, including Old World monkeys of both African and Asian origin. The results revealed at least two classes of virogenes; one class includes genotypes that are found among all Old World monkeys with no apparent correlation to their phylogeny or geographical habitat. These either represent virogenes that were introduced early before speciation of the Old World monkeys or proviruses of a more recent widespread infection. Another class contains genotypes that are distinct for African and Asian primates. Instead of a more rapid “divergence” of BaEV genes in Asian primates as previously proposed, our data are more consistent with prevalence of different strains of BaEV of this class in different geographical areas." @default.
