- W2017639600 abstract "The distribution and movement of cerebral amino acids, which occur through mediated transport processes, have been studied on a regional basis both in the living animal and in brain slices. Uptake, exit, and exchange processes of amino acids in brain show regionally heterogeneous patterns, which are fairly characteristic for each compound. The regional heterogeneity of amino acid distribution is often paralleled by the regional heterogeneity in the movement of metabolites, as measured by uptake and exchange in vivo, and by uptake and exit in vitro. Regional differences in amino acid distribution in brain are unlikely to be determined by differences in cell density or in the available energy. Other factors, such as the regional heterogeneity in transport, in availability of carriers, and the metabolic needs of a region, are important. Permeability is a complex and dynamic characteristic of the brain related not only to the maintenance of a homeostasis in brain composition but also to the control of the levels and fate of metabolites in the nervous system." @default.
