- W2017669652 abstract "G OALS common to both the clinical and investigative study of coronary heart disease concern accurate detection and definition of the site and extent of acute myocardial infarction, myocardial scar, and reversible myocardial ischemia. Radionuclide myocardial imaging techniques offer the possibility of ultimately fulfilling at least a portion of these goals. The increasing prevalence of the various myocardial imaging approaches over the past 5 yr has been due in part to major advances in instrumentation, development of new radiopharmaceuticals, and application of computer technology to standard clinical nuclear imaging. Early recognition of the association between acute myocardial ischemia and infarction and abnormality in regional potassium metabolism led to investigation of the possibility of utilizing radioactive potassium or radioactive potassium analogs to define abnormalities in the diseased atherosclerotic heart. When these radioactive cations are administered intravenously, sufficient myocardial uptake occurs to allow external detection or imaging of a myocardial radioactivity distribution. This distribution displays zones of infarction or ischemia as “cold spots,” or regions of relatively decreased to" @default.
