- W2017716106 abstract "The invention of the atomic force microscope (AFM) in 1986 by Binnig, Quate and Gerber has provided researchers with a powerful tool for the investigation of surfaces of nonconductive materials. This technique is of special interest to biologists since, not only it is possible to image various surfaces, but since scanning can be done under a liquid, buffer solutions can be employed such that biological molecules can be imaged under physiologically realistic conditions. One increasingly popular application of AFM is the investigation of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. These are thin organic layers formed by transferring a monolayer of amphiphiles from the surface of an aqueous subphase onto a solid substrate. Not only do LB films have possible applications in materials science and optics, but they provide model systems for the study of biological membranes. AFM has been used extensively in the investigation and characterization of both local bond ordering and overall film integrity in these quasi-two-dimensional structures. The local nature of this investigative technique can yield valuable information not provided by other methods." @default.
