- W2017775473 abstract "Model calculations have already demonstrated the possibility of determining the molecular orientation of adsorbed CO by using polar plots of the photoemission intensity from the CO 4σ level. It has been proposed that the c(4 × 2) structure of CO on Pt{100} contains two thirds of the CO molecules in a tilted configuration. We report a detailed angle-resolved photoemission study of this system, using an analyser which can be rotated in the plane orthogonal to the incidence plane. Data were obtained with HeI and HeII radiation at an incidence angle of 45°, with the incidence plane in both 〈01〉 and 〈11〉 azimuths. Polar plots of the 4σ level, 11.8 eV below EF, were found to peak 15–20° away from the surface normal, with HeII providing clear evidence for the presence of CO molecules tilted by 10–15° from the surface normal in the c(4 × 2) overlayer. The polar plots obtained from the 5σ level confirm that the angle of molecular tilt is less that ∼ 15°, and suggest that the symmetry of the 5σ orbital is substantially unchanged by adsorption." @default.
