Only one structure, a c(2 × 2), was found which could be associated with a Sn-Mo compound. In the presence of oxygen, the growth of the c(2 × 2) is inhibited unless the Mo is heated to 830°C in the presence of a low coverage of oxygen. Tin oxide will form but is decomposed to free tin plus low oxides of Mo. Attempts to form Mo 3 Sn (β-W structure) were unsuccessful.
