- W2017792986 abstract "Within the cell membrane, cholesterol and sphingolipids are not uniformly distributed, but are concentrated in regions known as lipid rafts, domains that are more ordered and less fluid than the surrounding membrane [ [1] Pike L.J. Lipid rafts: bringing order to chaos. J Lipid Res. 2003; 44: 655-667 Crossref PubMed Scopus (931) Google Scholar ]. Some lipid rafts are enriched in the ≈20 kDa cholesterol-binding protein caveolin which is responsible for the typical 40–100 nm invagination of the membrane; these rafts are therefore known as caveolae (‘little caves’). The reported enrichment of lipid rafts in a variety of signaling molecules has led to the idea of these domains as specialized orchestrators of signal transduction events. Lipid rafts offer a means of subcellular compartmentation which controls both the efficiency and specificity of signaling, and allows different receptors to elicit varied cellular responses." @default.
