- W2017804504 abstract "UCLA/Duke University National Center for ChildTraumatic Stress, Los Angeles, CA and Universityof California, Los AngelesIn defending the scientiÞc legitimacy of ceteris paribus qualiÞed causal generaliza-tions, we situate and specify the reference of the ceteris paribus proviso within afundamental causal framework consisting of causal agents, pathways of insuence, mediators, moderators, and causal consequences. In so doing, we provide an explica-tion of the reference and utility of the ceteris paribus proviso in terms of mediators andmoderators as these constitute the range of factors that can impinge on the relationbetween cause and effect. We argue that the conceptual causal roadmap embodied bythe ceteris paribus qualiÞcation serves as a schematic template for the ongoingidentiÞcation of causally relevant factors and plays an indispensable heuristic role inadvancing scientiÞc inquiry into causal relations. We then provide guidelines fordifferentiating between acceptable and unacceptable uses of ceteris paribus and de-scribe how mediators and moderators conceptually encompassed by the ceteris paribusproviso can be employed in evaluating the meaning and acceptability of proposedceteris paribus causal generalizations, as well serve as a guide to investigators in theprocessofdesigningstudiestoidentifyacausalagent, mediators, moderators, pathwaysof insuence, and causal consequences. Keywords:" @default.
