- W2017812402 abstract "In an electrically induced muscle cramp, threshold frequency (TF) is the frequency of stimulation at which the cramp originates. Muscle fatigue has been implicated as a factor in the cause of exercise associated muscle cramping. Therefore, the TF of a fatigued muscle should shift from a previously established baseline. PURPOSE To determine the effect of local muscle fatigue on TF of electrically induced muscle cramp. METHODS Ten healthy college students were counterbalanced assigned testing order and completed the following protocol. The pretest cramp induction consisted of a 2 s train of 1 ms pulses applied to the posterior tibial nerve with a frequency of 4 Hz. If cramp failed to develop, the frequency was increased 2 Hz. This method was continued until a cramp was induced in the flexor hallucis brevis muscle. Following the pretest, subjects performed 5 bouts of great toe curls at 60% MVC to failure with 1 min rest between bouts. Post-exercise, cramp induction was repeated as previously described. For the control condition, subjects completed pretest and posttest measures with 30 min rest between tests. Subjects reported twice 24 h apart. TF was recorded for each test and condition. A condition (fatigue/control) X test (pre/post) repeated measures ANOVA was calculated. RESULTS FT (Hz, mean ± SD) for each test and condition were: pre-fatigue, 21 ± 6; post-fatigue, 29 ± 10; pre-control, 22 ± 6; post-control, 23 ± 7. A test by condition interaction was observed (F1,9 = 13.89, P = 0.005). Post-hoc Bonferroni-corrected dependent t-tests showed an increase in post-fatigue TF compared to pre-fatigue (P = 0.001). No other differences were observed. CONCLUSION Local muscle fatigue significantly increases the TF of an electrically induced muscle cramp." @default.
