- W2017816648 abstract "Strength and stability of aggregates of four Vertisols from New South Wales, Australia, were examined. The effect of tillage on aggregate properties was evaluated by comparing paired sites of cultivated soils (8 to > 50 years) with adjacent native pasture soils that had never been cultivated. Results indicated that tillage had: (1) decreased the friability of two of the Vertisols (grey clays) but increased that of the other two (brown clays); (2) increased the tensile strength of the aggregates of the grey clays but decreased that of the brown clays; (3) increased slaking of the four soils. Chemical extraction treatments showed that for these Vertisols most of the bondings responsible for clay aggregation were pyrophosphate extractable and were therefore organic polymers complexed with polyvalent metal ions. Tillage had altered aggregate stabilisation in a number of ways, viz: (1) decreased the amount of clay extractable by pyrophosphate; (2) increased the amount of dispersible clay of the grey clays when subjected to Na+ treatment but decreased that of the brown clays; (3) decreased the amount of pyrophosphate-extractable Al and Fe, relative to organic carbon. The increase in tensile strength of the cultivated grey clays was related to the increase in dispersible clay released after sodium chloride treatment." @default.
