- W2017942750 abstract "Abstract For many applications, the requirement is for a moderately priced polymer that can be molded easily and exhibits adequate stiffness and toughness over a wide range of temperatures. The basic and simplest solution to this problem is to modify existing polymers that already possess many of the desired properties, but are lacking in toughness and stiffness. The approach can be combined: the polymer can be toughened by the addition of rubber or stiffened by means of fiber reinforcement. In the rubber-toughening process, a minor proportion of rubber (polybutadiene, PB), typically 5%–20%, is incorporated as a disperse phase into a rigid plastics matrix (polystyrene, PS). The polybutadiene (5–20%) incorporated into the polystyrene matrix is termed high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) and has a significantly higher fracture resistance than the parent polymer: impact strength, elongation at break, and fracture toughness are all increased several fold. There is an inevitable reduction in transparency, modulus, and tensile strength, but these losses are far outweighed by the gains in fracture resistance." @default.
