- W2017990173 abstract "THE QUESTION of the respective roles of genetics and environment in the etiology of hypertension is still unresolved. Recent findings indicating that blacks in the western world are at higher risk for developing high blood pressure than many other racial groups do little to clarify the controversy, since either explanation may be operative [l-4]. The increased susceptibility of this population may be on genetic grounds, or, given the particular history and situation of blacks in countries like the United States. one might argue equally logically in favor of a social stress explanation. One method for approaching this problem is to study people of similar genetic make-up who live in different environments. Comparisons, for example, of health measures among black Americans and black Africans are of interest. The history of these two groups over the past several hundred years, and their present living conditions are dramatically different. If it can be shown that, in spite of this they have the same risk for developing hypertension. this would provide support for a genetic hypothesis. If differences are found, epidemiological studies may provide clues about how environmental factors affect blood pressure levels. The present report is one of a small number dealing with blood pressure among black Africans [5510]. It concerns the Serer. a tribe of settled agriculturalists living in Senegal. West Africa. There is another and related reason for doing studies in Africa. As well as providing an opportunity to investigate how much of a contribution the social environment makes to illness, research in rapidly changing cultures can help to clarify what it is that constitutes sociopsychological ‘stress.’ In underdeveloped countries like Senegal. people are constantly being exposed to new and unfamiliar ways of life. and often at a very rapid pace. The presumed stress attendant on the process of acculturation under such circumstances has" @default.
