- W2017998759 abstract "Abstract The infectivity of cowpea chlorotic mottle virus (CCMV) in sap extracted from systemically infected cowpea plants treated with toxic levels of 2-thiouracil was markedly enhanced when treatment began at any time during the first 40 days after inoculation. When treatment began immediately after inoculation by spraying daily with 0.005 M 2-thiouracil, the infectivity of extracted sap was 3 times that of controls after 14 days of treatment. The virus nucleoprotein increased 5–20% while the specific infectivity did not change measurably. When treatment began 30 days after inoculation by maintaining plants in 0.001 M 2-thiouracil, infectivity of extracted sap and specific infectivity increased 10-fold by 14 days of treatment, while the virus nucleoprotein concentration decreased. Incorporation of 32P into the virus fraction demonstrated that thiouracil induced a 4- to 5-fold increase in the synthesis rate of CCMV in a 30–45-day-old infection. Thiouracil enhanced the infectivity of CCMV in tobacco, while under the same conditions tobacco mosaic virus was inhibited. Uracil counteracted the effect of thiouracil, but not at equal molarities." @default.
