- W2018010746 abstract "FICTION Beneath Lumen Lake Bev Olert Nobody's going my way, says Merideth Winslow Montgomery, smiling as she quickly glances in the rearview and eases the 450SL south onto Interstate 75. It is noon on a Wednesday, and the little midnight blue Mercedes sparkles, a brilliant sapphire on the empty highway. If she had planned this trip, this is exactly when she would have scheduled to leave. But this trip is different. She did not plan it. Therefore, it does not bear the burden of Merideth's meticulous and incessant over-planning and over-scheduling. This trip is the closest thing to spontaneity that has crept into her life in over a decade. It is one of those flawless spring days; clear blue sky, too early for humidity, but the temperature is already pushing over eighty degrees, as if to remind Kentucky that it truly does belong to the South. It was worth losing the half-hour at the garage to get Owen to pull the hardtop and fold back the convertible. Mother never did really enjoy this car, she thinks, as a twinge of regret pinches at her gut. Merideth runs her small hand through the tangled mess of curls, the color of winter wheat, blowing wildly in the rush of the convertible. The sun warms her face as she speeds past Hampton Cross Pavilion, the latest horse farm to evolve into a highway shopping Mecca. She nudges the car up to seventy and pops in one of her mother's old tapes. Oh, I love this! she squeals out loud and belts out the lyrics with Loretta, You ain't woman enough, No you ain't woman enough. The words she can't remember she just makes up or hums. She rolls on past the fields of the minute-mansions being slapped up on slab foundations. Ten per acre, they speckle the hills on either side of the six-lane like gaudy Easter eggs. Each new development claims to be Hampton Cross' most exclusive, most prestigious. Each boasts carefully chosen names like Chapman's Forest or Thoroughbred Thicket. Merideth notes that neither tree nor horse can be seen from any of these new houses—just strip malls and fast food and the blinding hum of the interstate traffic continually rolling further south. Nearly giddy from the sun and wind and old songs, Merideth tries to catch a glimpse of the river as she crosses at Clay's Ferry. All of the 66 anguish, all of the torment, all the false-hope of the last couple of years is finally over, and her mother is dead. And Merideth knows her own breasts are probably going to kill her too. But right now, none of that matters. Two years of tears and treatments, dragging her mother, first to some specialist in Toronto. Then to a secret clinic in Taos where Adele held certain colored stones while drinking four-thousand-yearold spring water. Chemo, radiation, colonic cleansing, prayer chains and novenas. Mastectomies and funerals and the useless worry, worry, worry of what would become of her poor daddy. Now all that tragedy just lifts in the wind and floats out the back of the convertible. And now it doesn't matter because for the first time in years Merideth is alone. The next three days are strictly her time. No kids, no husband, no dog, and she's going to the lake. In Kentucky that means Lumen Lake. The lake house and the Mercedes, she says, They are all I've got left of you Mom. She realizes that she is talking out loud. It is a habit she has picked up in the past few months. Since her mom died, she talks to her all the time. Out loud. It is driving Wilson nuts. You didn't talk to her this much when she was living, he always complains. With his thinning hair and wire rim glasses, he looks like that doctor on the popular TV show about working in the emergency room. Everyone says so. To tease him, her girlfriends even call him Dr. Greene. Ten years of marriage and Wilson is her rock. So faithful, so loving, so..." @default.
