- W2018063470 abstract "Cells in explants of eleven-day chick shank epidermis rapidly lose most of their ability to incorporate tritiated thymidine. Concomitantly, epidermal basal cells lose their columnar shape. Both properties reappear if dermis is combined with such epidermis. A number of experiments suggest that thymidine incorporation frequencies in epidermis can be influenced by the kind or age of dermis present, or by muscle as opposed to dermis. The addition of horse serum to the protein-free nutrients has no effect on such incorporation, although subsequent differentiative behavior is altered. Preliminary data further suggest that pre-culture in unlabeled thymidine is followed by slightly increased incorporation frequencies of tritiated thymidine. These and other results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that cellular incorporation of thymidine is dependent upon conditions in the epidermis tissue as a whole. These tissue conditions seem dependent upon specific mesenchymal association with the epidermis." @default.
