- W2018151 abstract "This chapter reviews the principal Portland cement phases. Portland cement is a polyphase inorganic binder. The principal phases present in it are alite, belite, aluminate, and aluminoferrite. The hydraulic properties of cement are to a large extent dependent on these phases. A review on the hydraulicity of cement phases with respect to their crystal forms/polymorphism, solid solution and defect structure is important from the academic and also from industrial point of view. Any drastic improvement on the hydraulic reactivity of C3S phase is far-fetched. The introduction of defects in the structure of cement phases by various means apparently leads to higher reactivity, and considerable studies in this area have been reported; however, quantification and reproductility of results is yet to be achieved. The change in the donor–acceptor level with varying amounts of dopants is an interesting proposition but the claim of higher reactivity with multiple of defects by the presence of several elements is experimentally observed but is difficult to correlate. R&D in this area is fraught with many problems but bids fair to be interesting." @default.
