He received his Habilitation from the Friedrich-Wilhelms–Universität in Berlin in 1927, where he lectured as a Privatdozent until his emigration to the USA. This article aims at making a contribution to this early part of Neumann’s scientific biography by analyzing in detail the procedure that led to his Habilitation as well as the beginnings of Neumann’s research on functional analysis. An analysis of the relevant sources shows that in Berlin in the year 1927 Neumann was not yet regarded as the outstanding mathematical genius of the 20th century. Furthermore it will be seen that Neumann had great difficulties in developing the fundamental concepts for his path breaking work in spectral theory and only managed to do so with the support of the Berlin mathematician Erhard Schmidt. Der ungarische Mathematiker John von Neumann erhielt seine wissenschaftliche Sozialisation hauptsächlich im deutschen Wissenschaftssystem, wo er sich 1927 an der Berliner Universität habilitierte und dann bis zu seiner Emigration in die USA als Privatdozent lehrte. Dieser Artikel nutzt eine Analyse der Habilitation Neumanns, um ein präziseres Bild seiner wissenschaftliche Entwicklung zu gewinnen, und zielt dabei insbesondere auf die Entstehung und zeitgenössischen Einschätzung der Arbeiten Neumanns zur Funktionalanalysis. Entgegen dem in der Neumann-Historiographie tradierten Bild zeigt sich, dass Neumann 1927 noch nicht als das große mathematische Genie gesehen wurde und dass es Neumann zunächst nur unter großen Schwierigkeiten und mit Unterstützung seines Berliner Lehrers Erhard Schmidt gelang, die wissenschaftlichen Grundkonzepte für seine bahnbrechenden Forschungen zur Spektraltheorie zu entwickeln." @default.
