Dairy cows change their average rate of ingestion with stall configuration, feed bowl shape, con-centrate requirement of the individual animal, and stall accessibility. These factors combine to control the maxi-mum number of animals that can be supplied a concentrate ration in an automatic, individual, ad libitum feeding system. The number of animals that can be supplied by a single unit has a direct effect on the relative cost of the system per animal. In this research, cows ate 0.48 cm diameter pellets 17 percent faster than meal and ate meal at 0.29 and 0.39 kg/min when the dispensing rates were 0.45 and 0.91 kg/min respec-tively. Whether multiple-feed stalls were visually isolated or not had no significant effect on the amount of feed received by the cows, although it did affect the patterns of stall use. The amount of feed that could be dispensed per stall per day was limited to approximately 180 kg with the stalls used, with meal dispensed at 0.45 kg/min and with the cows getting essentially all of their daily concen-trate requirements." @default.
