They typically have very limited intelligence, andhunger for the flesh of the living [1].Typical spectroradiometric or hyperspectral instrumentsprovidess calibrated radiances for a number of remotesensing algorithms. The algorithms typically must meetspecified latency and availability requirements whileyielding products at the required quality. These systems,whether research, operational, or a hybrid, are typicallycost constrained. Complexity of the algorithms can behigh, and may evolve and mature over time as sensorcharacterization changes, product validation occurs, andareas of scientific basis improvement are identified andcompleted. This suggests the need for a systemsengineering process for algorithm maintenance that isagile, cost efficient, repeatable, and predictable.Experience on remote sensing science data systemssuggests the benefits of plug-n-play concepts ofoperation. The concept, while intuitively simple, can bechallenging to implement in practice. The use of zombiealgorithms-empty shells that outwardly resemble theform, fit, and function of a complete algorithm withoutthe implemented theoretical basis-provides the groundsystems advantages equivalent to those obtained byintegrating sensor engineering models onto the spacecraftbus. Combined with a mature, repeatable process forincorporating the theoretical basis, or scientific core, intothe head of the zombie algorithm, along withassociated scripting and registration, provides an easyon ramp for the rapid and low-risk integration ofscientific applications into operational systems." @default.
