- W2018268431 abstract "The use by senior citizens of a community's supportive services may be influenced by physician's knowledge of these services. Therefore, physicians can serve as important links between the elderly and the aging service agencies. In order to determine what physicians who are likely to treat elderly patients know about the assistance available locally, 55 physicians from Greensboro, North Carolina, were asked to complete a survey inquiring about their knowledge of in-home and out-of-home services for the elderly. Knowledge of those services did not differ significantly among the physician specialities included the sample of respondents (internists, family practitioners, orthopedists and surgeons). The respondents did have significantly less knowledge about out-of-home than in-home services and were primarily aware of medically-related services. In addition, internists reported a lower referral rate than other specialists though they estimated that the percentage of elderly clients with non-medical problems was greater than that estimated by the other physicians. These results suggest that medical school the services available for the elderly as a useful aspect of their training, particularly in the case of internists." @default.
