- W2018366141 abstract "2-Mercaptoethylamine (MEA) complexes with various metals; the apparent instability constants of such complexes have been determined by Knoblock and Purdy (1), and copper complexes have been isolated by Klotz et al. (2). It is thus possible that MEA could inhibit metal-catalyzed reactions by chelation. In order to test this, the iron-catalyzed peroxidation of unsaturated lipids was used. This reaction as it occurs in microsomes and mitochondria has been carefully studied by Ottolenghi (3). Addition of ferrous ion causes some peroxidation which stops abruptly unless ascorbic acid is present to reduce the ferric ion formed during the reaction. The iron is thus recycled. As shown below, cysteine or thiolactic acid (TA) can replace ascorbic acid as the reducing agent. Their effect is inhibited by relatively small amounts of MEA. Moreover, cysteine and TA can increase lipid peroxidation in certain tissues exposed to ultraviolet light. This effect is also inhibited by MEA. The catalytic effect of cysteine on lipid peroxidation was first demonstrated by Meyerhof (4). No work has been done with TA, so its effects will be described in detail." @default.
