- W2018385691 abstract "This chapter discusses helium detector (HeD). The HeD signal is provided by current caused by the ionization of the eluted substance by metastable states of helium or argon. The HeD background current is determined by the ionization of argon or helium by primary electrons, by de-excitation of metastable states and by the ionization of impurities present in the carrier gas. The HeD response equals the sum of the background current and the ionization current of the eluted substance. The magnitude of the response and its character are determined by all of the interactions of the eluted substance. The ionization current increases as a result of the ionization of the eluted substance by metastable states and primary and accelerated secondary electrons, and decreases because of ionization by electron capture. The HeD response in an impure carrier gas is dependent on the quality and amount of the eluted substance and also on the properties of the impurities. It is necessary to evaluate the mutual relations of ionization and excitation potentials and to consider competing processes. The chapter also discusses linearity and linear dynamic range of the HeD, construction of the helium and argon detectors, and others." @default.
