- W2018473642 abstract "Critical incident stress debriefing (CISD) is a concept that began in the military but is beginning to be used in health care organizations. Debriefing is a mechanism used to prevent or diminish symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (Rubin, 1990). A critical incident is any situation faced by emergency service personnel that causes them to experience unusually strong emotional reactions that have the potential to interfere with their abilities to function either at the scene or later (Mitchell, 1983, p. 36). Burns and Harm (1993) used a 4-point Likert-type scale to evaluate and rank critical incidents of emergency-room nurses. Stress is an emotional factor that causes both bodily and mental exhaustion. The debriefing is a group process that provides psychological and emotional support in a group setting (Rubin, 1990). In today's managed care atmosphere, clients are returned to the community as soon as possible. Because hospital stays are becoming shorter, much of the client's recuperation occurs in the community. The literature on CISD refers only to use of the technique for emergency personnel responding to events. Victims of critical incidents can benefit from debriefing as well, but it may have to take place after the client has returned home and be provided by the community health nurse. Many organizations are forming CISD teams. Usually these teams are made up of emergency and mental health personnel only. The community health nurse should be included on the teams from the beginning to provide continuity of care and follow-up as needed. The American Red Cross is the primary volunteer agency to respond to disasters and traumatic events. It assists in more than 40,000 disasters a year in the United States alone (Tomalso, 1992). Many of the Red Cross volunteers are community health nurses. Because this is a new concept to health care, CISD needs to be defined and incorporated into all areas of nursing." @default.
