- W2018538055 abstract "Nonunion of the tibia is common. Early recognition and successful management, however, can be challenging. Patient morbidity is minimized by achieving union in a timely manner, but this requires a thorough understanding of the variables involved in nonunion etiology and knowing how and when to initiate treatment. This article reviews the diagnosis and treatment of tibial nonunions with an update on effective management strategies. Tibial nonunion diagnosis and management have been extensively studied over the last few years. Current research has focused on the use of nonoperative treatment modalities such as electromagnetic stimulation and ultrasound. Recent surgical techniques focus on different methods of fixation and the use of biological enhancement with bone grafting and bone graft substitutes. Despite the many challenges involved in managing a tibial nonunion, successful treatment can be expected in most patients. Making a timely diagnosis and knowing how and when to intervene are key to achieving the best outcome. A thorough understanding of the available treatment techniques is essential to treating the complete spectrum of tibial nonunions." @default.
