The sorption rate process and the infrared spectra show that both the acid and salt forms do not change their conformations by hydration. Furthermore, both forms remain in the β-structure of antiparallel chain type at all relative humidities. The sorption isotherm of the acid form is of the Brunauer Type V, indicating a low affinity of the polymer with water. The sorption isotherm of the sodium salt belongs to the Brunauer Type II, and the amount of water sorbed is much larger than that on the acid form. The difference indicates the importance of the ionized groups as the sorption sites for water." @default.
