This ethylene asymmetry was based on a similarly asymmetric distribution of the ethylene precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC), which is proposed to be the result of an unequal synthesis of ACC. Although ACC asymmetry also occurred in the straight zone just below the hook elbow, ethylene contents in this part were balanced. The equalization was presumably the consequence of the asymmetric distribution of the ethylene forming enzyme (EFE), whose gradient of activity was just opposite to that of ACC concentration. Furthermore, from the effects of aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) on growth and ACC content it is concluded that apart from a varying responsiveness of the tissue to ethylene the asymmetric distribution of endogenous ethylene may play a role in regulating the differential growth during hook maintenance." @default.
