- W2018608862 abstract "During three years of testing (1988–1990) the effects of seed density (200, 400, 800, 1200 seeds/m2) and nitrogen fertilization (40 kg/ha N, 80 kg/ha N) on yield and yield physiology of linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) were tested on four German locations. Two regions represented the cool humid northern climate of Sleswig-Holstein (Hohenschulen—sandy loam soil; Heidmoor—sandy soil) and the two others examplified the southern climate with slight continental character (Freising, Bavaria; Rauisch-Holzhausen, Hesse). Independently of location, enhanced N-fertilization and moderate seed density were pre-requisites to gain higher yields. The highest seed yields exceeding 3 t/ha were obtained at Rauisch-Holzhausen. At this location some different combinations of seed densities and nitrogen applications were effective in providing appreciably high yields. On the other hand, in the cooler growing area there was only a narrow range of combined treatments to achieve satisfactory yields. Four hundred seeds/m2 and 80 kg/ha N resulted in highest yield performance (2.44 t/ha). Physiological evaluations were conducted on the two northern locations in order to explain variation in yield. It could be clearly demonstrated that the distribution of the above-ground biomass shifted towards seeds and capsules at lower seed densities although higher seed densities (800, 1200 seeds/m2) caused higher total dry matter. Thus, the relationship between seed weight or capsule mass and total biomass and between seed weight and total capsule mass were distinctly promoted towards seeds and capsules, respectively. Leaf dry matter was highest at the start of flowering. At this stage high seed densities reached the overall highest values but, shortly thereafter they fell off drastically. At 200 and 400 seeds/m2 the green leaf area remained constant much longer so that the assimilatory capacity was more effective during growth of capsules and seeds." @default.
