- W2018644940 abstract "The effects of botulinum toxin on the EEG and brain cortical ACh levels of cats and guinea pigs were investigated. The toxin had no significant effect on the EEG of normal animals when administered intraperitoneally, but close intra-arterial injections produced a marked depression of the EEG. In animals with experimentally induced, chronic primary and secondary epileptogenic foci, intraperitoneal injection of toxin was effective in reducing cortical paroxysmal electrogenic activity. Analysis of the brain cortical ACh levels of animals having received toxin by close arterial injection showed that there was a significant increase in the levels of ACh, which occurred concomitantly to the depression of the EEG. These observations are taken as suggestive evidence that botulinum toxin acts in the central nervous system as in the peripheral nervous system to suppress the neurosynaptic release of ACh." @default.
