- W2018683618 abstract "Polarized epithelial cells form barriers between two biologic compartments in the body and regulate the ionic composition of these compartments by vectorial transport of ions and solutes. 12 McNeill H Ozawa M Kemler R Nelson WJ. Novel function of the cell adhesion molecule uvomorulin as an inducer of cell surface polarity. Cell. 1990; 62: 309-316 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (348) Google Scholar In tissues such as the kidney, the epithelium separates the lumen of the tubule from the blood supply. Ions and solutes are reabsorbed from the tubule lumen (ultrafiltrate) and vectorially delivered back to the blood supply on the other side of the epithelium. This unique function of the epithelium requires that the space between cells is sealed by the tight junction, and that there is a nonrandom distribution of proteins between the membrane domains that face each biologic compartment. Proteins involved in the absorption of ions and solutes, including ion channels and cotransporters, are restricted to the apical membrane domain, whereas, proteins involved in signal transduction, cell-cell and cell-substratum contact, and some ion transporters (eg, Na/K-ATPase) are restricted to the basal-lateral domain. 1 Rodriguez-Boulan E Nelson WJ.
