- W2018695798 abstract "Abstract Lithium salts have been widely prescribed for many years in the acute and prophylactic treatment of bipolar affective disorder. However, the precise mechanism of lithium action is incompletely understood. The latency in onset of antimanic and mood-stabilizing effects of lithium suggest that long-term adaptation mediated by changes in gene expression may be important to the therapeutic action of lithium treatment. In this review, the effects of lithium, via transcriptional and posttranscriptional mechanisms, to modulate the expression of a variety of genes are discussed in the context of aberrant signaling cascades and/or impaired cellular resilience implicated in the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying bipolar disorder. Future studies with combined microarray and proteomic approach will have significant implications not only for new therapeutic strategies, but may also provide important clues about the underlying etiology/pathophysiology of bipolar disorder." @default.
