- W2018713633 abstract "The role and importance of materials synthesis in the total materials research effort is argued again in a more receptive climate, today. Causes for its neglect are described. The major advances in materials science as well as technology have been triggered by the discovery of new materials by highly perceptive and intuitive scientists/engineers. Today we must rely on a combination of a logical approach coupled to empirricism and a strategy to capitalize on the certain chance events. In a scientific approach to synthesis the absurdity of the simple-mineded connection between “structure and properties” will be exposed. Structure and composition are equally important. Crystal chemistry and phase equilibria are the essential compositional descriptors in contemporary state-of-art ability to design and make materials with particular desired properties. The present-day capabilities of controlling composition and structure to synthesize materials to predesigned specifications will be described. The following examples of recent advances in ceramic materials have been selected to illustrate both the possibilities and the limitations of our present ability: (1) “zero” expansion ceramics, (2) metastable crystalline diamond, (3) RESA, a novel process for making fine powders, (4) nanocomposites and (5) oxide superconductors." @default.
