- W201872015 abstract "The slime mold or myxomycete, Physarum polycephalum, represents a naturally synchronous system, which has become a promising tool for biochemical studies of periodic events related to the mitotic cycle. This organism has been known to biologists for a long time because of its rapid cytoplasmic shuttle streaming. This chapter is concerned with recent studies referring to the long term periodicity of synchronous nuclear division and to the short period oscillation of the streaming cytoplasm. Plasmodia of Physarum polycephalum are multinuclear and might be cultivated axenically on a defined liquid medium. This organism might be regarded as a giant single cell which is suited for studies on the biochemistry of the mitotic cycle. One possible approach to the molecular level of growth control is to look for biochemical events that exhibit periodicity in relation to the division cycle. The best known periodic process in dividing cells is the replication of chromosomal DNA, which is restricted to a particular segment of the cell cycle, the S-period. In Physarum polycephalum, all nuclei synthesize their DNA synchronously during the first three hours of interphase." @default.
