- W2018742788 abstract "Abstract Catalytic activities of various divalent metal salts for the ortho -selective hydroxymethylation of phenol by formaldehyde are quantitatively evaluated at pH 2–8. Zinc (II) nitrate, acetate, bromide and sulfate significantly increase both the selectivity and the yield for the formation of 2-(hydroxymethyl) phenol ( 1 ). Selectivity is 95% when the concentration of zinc (II) nitrate is 0.75 mol dm −3 at pH 5.1 (selectivity in its absence: 55%). Cobalt (II), manganese (II) and nickel (II) chlorides also enhance the ortho -reaction, although less efficiently. In contrast, the catalytic activities of iron (II), copper (II) and magnesium (II) chlorides are virtually zero. The selective synthesis of 1 catalyzed by the zinc (II) salts is kineticaly and spectroscopically analyzed, and a mechanism for the ortho -orientation is proposed." @default.
