At this temperature, the total moles of CHx(x=0, 1, 2, 3) accumulated on the catalyst surface was significantly greater than the moles of surface Co, and the 3% C2+yield/site obtained from hydrogenation of the CHxspecies at 100°C was significantly higher than the <1% reported in previous studies. However, a significant fraction of the CH4produced inactive carbon and this led to catalyst deactivation during repeated cycling. C2+selectivity decreased when the deposit was aged at either 450 or 100°C and when the activation temperature decreased. These trends were related to changes in the H content of the CHxspecies, withx=1 giving the highest C2+selectivity. Generation of C2+products in the second step by isothermal (100°C) reaction in Ar instead of H2demonstrated that C–C bond formation occurred after activation, whereas the presence of H2facilitated hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of C–C surface species, thereby decreasing C2+selectivity in comparison with Ar." @default.
