• W2018973793 abstract "We′re very excited to deliver the first issue of another volume of top-notch sustainability research in 2015. This issue marks the start of our eighth volume since we succeeded Annali di Chimica in 2008, and ChemSusChem again expanded its size and reach in 2014: we are receiving more manuscripts from more countries than ever before, and are publishing more papers than ever before. To make room for these exciting developments, we are increasing our number of issues to 24 per year. Seeing all of those names, laboratories, cities, and countries appear in our inboxes every single day makes us aware that sustainability is very much of global concern. Carbon dioxide molecules in the atmosphere and other pollutants do not care much for borders. The international spirit shown by authors, readers, and reviewers is exemplified in Figure 1, which shows from which countries we received the most manuscripts in 2014. Although the strong presence of Asia is evident, the numbers for North America and Europe underwrite the global scope of the journal. In addition, more so than ever before, these days many papers are published by teams working across countries and continents. Origin of manuscripts submitted in 2014. To strengthen the involvement of the scientific community and our international reach, several new members will join the journal′s International Advisory Board in 2015: Prof. Yao Fu (Hefei University of Science and Technology, PR China), Prof. Ive Hermans (UW Madison, USA), Prof. Bert Sels (KU Leuven, Belgium), and Prof. Keiichi Tomishige (Tohoku University, Japan). We are very honored that they will act as board member and look forward to working with them in the future. You can read a bit more about them in the biographies below. Speaking of our board members: in this issue you will find the first of a new article series called “Across the Board”. In every issue, one of our board members will discuss recent sustainability work that (s)he considers very important. The series kicks off with a contribution by Prof. Licheng Sun, who discusses electrochemical water splitting. Because we′ll feature a different board member in every issue, you will not only get to know our board members and their research better, but will also gain insight into what they consider high-quality work and why.1 We received many excellent cover images in 2014, and the number of designs currently posted onto the wall in our office shows that the imagination of our authors shows no signs of slowing down. Some particularly inspired covers are shown here. We are often asked what criteria are used when deciding whether a certain article is going to be featured on the cover. The most important ones are the scientific rating of the manuscript by the reviewers and the quality of the cover artwork provided by the authors. We strongly encourage the submission of original and imaginative cover art with accepted manuscripts—showcase your creativity! Remember that front covers will be given special attention through our Cover Profiles, an excellent chance to showcase your research and the team behind it.1 1 You can join the online conversation by following us on Twitter, where we will keep you up to date on every single article we publish. We also have a LinkedIn group, where you can connect with the editors and colleague scientists and discuss not only papers, but anything that concerns sustainability. Since a few months, ChemSusChem as well as other Wiley-VCH and Wiley journals keep close tabs on the attention our articles are getting on such social media platforms by using Altmetrics. By using these “alternative metrics”, our authors have a new way of learning how their articles are received by the community. Altmetrics track mentions on social media, online reference managers, blogs, and other sources. There are some things that were already mentioned in the Editorial of Issue 1, 2014, but that we are keen to remind you of here as we consider them important tools to help you achieve your goals. Particularly with Open Access, we are ready to help you meet the expectations you and/or your funder have of a scientific publisher. 1 In 2014, the publishing program of ChemPubSoc Europe grew through the addition of ChemElectroChem, and the new title quickly established itself as an influential journal in the electrochemistry community. And finally, in October the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was shared by several researchers closely involved with ChemPhysChem: in March the journal published a special issue on “Superresolution Imaging and Nanophotonics”, guest-edited by (amongst others) Prof. W. E. Moerner and featuring contributions by Prof. Stefan Hell as well. Other highlights were the 20th anniversary of Chemistry—A European Journal and the excellent first Journal Impact Factors for ChemPlusChem (3.242) and ChemistryOpen (2.938).1 2015 will be exciting also: the coming year marks the 10th anniversary of ChemMedChem, ChemPubSoc Europe′s premier journal on research at the interface of chemistry, biology, and medicine. ChemSusChem is a ChemPubSoc Europe journal, but in addition the Asian Chemical Editorial Society (ACES, http://www.aces-chemistry-society-publishing.org/aces.html), recognizing the global importance of sustainability, also supports the journal. Together, the ACES member societies represent most countries in Asia, and we already enjoy a good collaboration with their journals Chemistry—An Asian Journal (http://www.chemasianj.org, @ChemAsianJ) and the Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry (http://www.asianjoc.org, @AsianJOrgChem). 1 In 2015, the range of journals will be expanded by the addition of ChemNanoMat, covering the chemistry of nanomaterials in all of its facets, including applications in energy, biology, and beyond.
