- W2018983433 abstract "PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess changes in salivary and plasma factors during cognitive testing with short-term maximal aerobic exercise in young women. METHODS: Healthy low CVD risk females, using birth control, 21.8 ± 2.7 yrs old, 23.5 ± 4.9 % body fat, VO2max of 51.3 ± 6.8 ml/kg/min completed two visits: 1) exercise: before, during, and after a discontinuous short-term maximal treadmill exercise protocol and, 2) non-exercise: time-matched to exercising testing. Non-stimulated, timed saliva was assayed for estradiol, α-amylase, and cortisol and venous blood for glycerol, NEFA, glucose, and lactate from before and after exercise and recovery. At breaks in exercise, heart rate and RPE were determined as well as finger stick glucose and lactate. RESULTS: Estradiol was not different between days and closely reflected follicular phase levels. α-amylase was higher after exercise and recovery than before in both conditions (ranging from 47% to 290% higher) and was also 35% higher after exercise in the Exercise condition. Cortisol was 33% higher before versus after exercise and 59% higher than recovery, irrespective of exercise. Non-Exercise: Finger stick glucose decreased over time while venous lactate was 61% higher after compared to before and recovery. NEFA was 50% higher at post and recovery compared to baseline. Exercise: Venous glucose and lactate were, 18% and 50% higher, after compared to before and recovery. After exercise glycerol was 11% higher than recovery. NEFA was 36% higher after exercise and recovery compared to before. Differences between conditions: Heart rate increased over time in exercise with recovery being higher than before exercise. RPE was higher at every time during actual exercise. After exercise venous glucose and lactate were, 20% and 40% higher. Finger stick glucose and lactate were higher than non-exercise during and after exercise. NEFA was 15% higher in the Non-Exercise condition at both post exercise and recovery. Glycerol was 11% lower after exercise in the exercise vs. non-exercise condition. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated that acute exercise coupled with cognitive task in our protocol increases α-amylase levels, but not cortisol, potentially due to a differential stress response, but most likely due to the timing of sample collection." @default.
