- W2019062394 abstract "Scholars approaching the issue of defining key terms should be wary of relying too heavily on etymological definitions (Warburton 1996). The terms of interest often shift meaning over time and assume new and subtle forms. Nevertheless, the derivation of a concept, particularly a generic and abstract concept such as entertainment, can occasionally be illuminating as it can provide an insight into the current use. For those with an interest in the history of leisure and society it is perhaps not surprising to appreciate that entertainment has its roots in the leisured world of Roman society and more specifically in the Latin verb 'tenere' to hold and the prefix 'enter' meaning among or together (cf. Bammel and Bammel 1992). These roots form part of the meaning of entertainment to be pursued in this introduction and throughout this special issue of Tourism Recreation Research. The interest in this introduction and the accompanying papers is in those forms of the phenomenon of entertainment provided predominantly for tourists and which hold their attention in a social context." @default.
