- W2019161723 abstract "The earliest attempts at surgical treatment of epilepsy may date back into antiquity. A few remarkable successful operations for epilepsy were achieved by the early 19th century. However, the modern era of epilepsy surgery began on May 25, 1886, at the National Hospital for Paralysed and Epileptic, Queen Square, London. Sir Victor Horsley at age 29 performed his first successful craniotomy for focal seizures secondary to a depressed skull fracture. Not coincidentally, the patient was under the care of H. Jackson and D. Ferrier. In fact, epilepsy surgery was the logical application of the contemporary advancement in knowledge related to cerebral function, epilepsy, asepsis, and anesthesia. By the end of 1886, Horsley had completed nine successful surgeries for epilepsy and had firmly established the efficacy of the procedure. The subsequent development of epilepsy surgery has been closely linked with advancement of neuroscience. Collaborative work of Foerster and Altenburger in Germany, Penfield and Jasper in Montreal, and other interdisciplinary teams have enhanced our understanding of cerebral electrophysiology/function and have established the diagnostic and operative techniques for modern epilepsy surgery. Today, epilepsy surgery is experiencing an exponential growth associated with further refinements in technology and our understanding of brain function." @default.
